Does Any of This Sound Familiar?
These experiences are more common than you might think. The good news is that relief is closer than it feels right now.
What Happens When You Wait?
Infection Spreads
Bacteria trapped around an impacted tooth can spread to neighboring teeth and surrounding tissue.
Adjacent Teeth Shift
Pressure from an impacted wisdom tooth gradually pushes neighboring teeth out of alignment.
Crowding Gets Worse
Teeth that were once straight may shift, making future orthodontic treatment more complex and costly.
Cysts Can Develop
Fluid-filled sacs sometimes form around impacted wisdom teeth and can damage nearby bone.
Treatment Becomes Harder
Roots grow longer and more curved over time, making extraction more involved than it would have been earlier.
Costs Increase
Treating infections, bone damage, or orthodontic complications down the road typically costs more than early removal.
Addressing wisdom teeth sooner almost always means a simpler procedure and a smoother recovery.
What Is Wisdom Teeth Removal and How Does It Work?
Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last set of teeth to come in, typically between the ages of 17 and 21. Because most mouths don’t have enough room to accommodate them, these teeth frequently become impacted, meaning they get stuck beneath the gumline or grow in at an angle that causes crowding and pressure. Removal involves carefully extracting one or more of these teeth to prevent or relieve the problems they cause. Some extractions are straightforward, while others require a minor surgical approach if the tooth is fully or partially trapped beneath the gums.
At Raleigh Dental Arts, our approach to wisdom teeth removal in Raleigh starts with a thorough assessment using 3-D cone beam CT imaging, which gives us a detailed view of the tooth position, root orientation, and surrounding structures before we touch anything. This level of planning allows us to personalize each extraction and anticipate anything that could affect your comfort or recovery, so nothing during your procedure catches us off guard.

What to Expect During Wisdom Teeth Removal
Consultation and Imaging
You'll sit down with one of our doctors for a thorough exam that includes 3-D cone beam CT imaging. This gives us a precise, three-dimensional view of your wisdom teeth, root positions, and nearby nerves, so we can map out your extraction before the day of your procedure. You'll leave this appointment knowing exactly what to expect.
Personalized Sedation Planning
Before your procedure day, we talk through sedation options together. Depending on your comfort level and the complexity of your extraction, you may choose nitrous oxide for mild relaxation, oral conscious sedation for a deeper sense of calm, IV sedation, or general anesthesia administered by an anesthesiologist right in our office. There's no one-size-fits-all approach here.
The Extraction
On procedure day, your chosen sedation is administered so you're fully comfortable before we begin. Our doctors carefully remove the wisdom tooth or teeth, working with the precision that comes from detailed pre-surgical planning. Most patients are surprised by how little they feel during the procedure.
Recovery Preparation
Before you leave, we send you home with clear aftercare instructions, prescribed medication guidance, and everything you need to recover smoothly. Our team stays available so you're never left wondering if something is normal.

What Recovery Looks Like After Wisdom Teeth Removal
First 24-48 Hours
Some mild swelling, tenderness, and light bleeding in the first day or two are normal parts of the healing process. Resting, keeping your head slightly elevated, and sticking to soft foods during this window goes a long way. Most patients find over-the-counter or prescribed relief keeps them comfortable throughout.
First Week
Swelling typically peaks around day two or three and then begins to ease. You'll gradually transition back toward a more normal diet as comfort allows. A follow-up visit lets us confirm everything is healing on track and address any questions that have come up since your procedure.
Long-Term Healing
The extraction site continues healing beneath the surface over the following weeks. Bone and tissue gradually fill in, and most patients return to their full routine well before that process is complete.
