How do you diagnose and treat sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea treatment is crucial for maintaining overall health. Left untreated, sleep apnea increases your risk of developing serious health issues, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

Diagnosing Sleep Apnea

While we don’t diagnose sleep apnea directly at Raleigh Dental Arts, we work closely with trusted sleep physicians and specialists who do. Proper diagnosis typically involves a sleep study, either at a sleep center or through a home test, to monitor your breathing patterns and vital signs while you sleep.

Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea

Once a sleep physician diagnoses your sleep apnea, our dentists can provide oral appliance therapy as an effective treatment option. Oral appliance therapy (OAT) involves creating a custom-fitted device that repositions your lower jaw or tongue to keep your airway open during sleep. This device helps alleviate sleep apnea symptoms, such as loud snoring and disrupted sleep.

For those who qualify, oral appliances are a comfortable and convenient alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines that many people can’t tolerate. OAT devices are easy to wear and maintain, making it easier to comply with treatment.
