What Constitutes a Dental Emergency

A dental emergency is any issue that requires immediate attention to relieve tooth pain, save a tooth, or treat an infection. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe toothache
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Lost or damaged crowns or fillings
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Partially dislodged teeth
  • Soft tissue injuries, such as lacerations
  • Dental abscesses or infections

When Your Tooth Cannot Be Saved

Your emergency dentist in Raleigh will work fast to save your injured tooth. But issues like a powerful knock to the mouth, untreated decay, deep infection, and gum disease can mean emergency extraction. Fortunately, this does not mean the end of your smile.

Same-Day Bridges

Using state-of-the-art technology, we can often restore your smile without delay. Raleigh Dental Arts is your home for same-day bridges and prompt care.

Dental Implants

A traditional dental implant is the best way to replace a single missing tooth. It provides beauty and aesthetics, and you'll appreciate its natural function.

Implant Prosthetics

Whether you need a single tooth replaced or several, today's dental implants (All-on-4®) provide options to meet your tooth loss needs and goals.

Tips for Handling Dental Emergencies

The first steps in an emergency are to call your emergency dentist in Raleigh and try to remain calm. When you do, you are better able to control the situation rather than having it control you.

Toothaches

For a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss around the affected tooth gently to remove any debris. Avoid using heat, and don’t place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum to avoid further damage.

Broken Teeth

For chipped or broken teeth, collect any fragments and rinse your mouth with warm water. If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure using gauze or a clean cloth. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.

Lost Crowns and Fillings

If a crown or filling comes loose, keep it in a safe place and avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth. Temporarily reattach the crown using dental cement, denture adhesive, or toothpaste, but don't use any glue.

Knocked-Out Teeth

Time is of the essence with a knocked-out tooth, and seeing us within the first hour greatly increases our chance of saving it. Find the tooth, gently rinse it with water, and be careful not to touch the root. Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket, but don't force it. If you can't reinsert it, place the tooth in a small container with milk or your saliva.
