Same-Day Dental Crowns: A Versatile Tooth Restoration

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap custom-made of porcelain, zirconia, or other durable material. The crown covers the entire visible part of a damaged or broken tooth, restoring its strength, function, and appearance.

Our dentists use crowns at our Raleigh, NC, dental office to address a variety of concerns, including:

  • Restoring a broken or cracked tooth
  • Strengthening a that’s too decayed for a filling
  • Protecting a tooth after a root canal treatment
  • Anchoring a dental bridge
  • Improving a tooth’s appearance
  • Restoring a dental implant’s function and appearance

Common Reasons You Might Need a Dental Crown

Dentists recommend same-day dental crowns in Raleigh, NC, for various reasons. Sometimes, patients choose crowns for cosmetic purposes. Below, we've shared a few common reasons for capping teeth.

Damaged Tooth

A tooth injury or prior infection can weaken the tooth structure, putting it at risk for breakage. A crown can support the injured tooth against loss.

Short Tooth

A short or worn tooth means your bite is no longer level, which can damage teeth and jaw bone integrity. A dental crown can lengthen the tooth.

Flawed Tooth

A same-day dental crown conceals many cosmetic flaws, including chips, cracks, discoloration, and general imperfections. Are you a candidate?

4 Steps for Getting a Dental Crown

At Raleigh Dental Arts, we offer both traditional and CEREC same-day crowns, giving you options to suit your individual needs. Once our dentists determine that a crown is suitable for your needs, you can expect the following steps:

  • Preparing the tooth — We carefully reshape and prepare the tooth to make room for the crown. Sometimes, this involves removing decay or building up the tooth to support the crown.
  • Taking an impression — Our cosmetic dentists in Raleigh, NC, take a comfortable digital impression of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. This step creates a 3-D virtual model that our custom dental lab uses to create your crown. In the case of CEREC, we use the model to directly design and mill your crown in-office.
  • Placing the temporary crown — If you're receiving a traditional crown, we will place a temporary one to protect your tooth while your final crown is being fabricated.
  • Placing the final crown — When your custom crown is ready, our dentists check it carefully for fit, color, and bite before cementing it onto your prepared tooth.

Dental Bridges: A Reliable Solution for Missing Teeth

Dental bridges are a popular and effective way to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of an artificial tooth, or pontic, held in place by dental crowns attached to adjacent healthy teeth. This restoration restores your smile's appearance and helps distribute the forces of biting, preventing nearby teeth from shifting out of position.

The process for getting dental bridges is similar to that of dental crowns, with the addition of preparing the neighboring teeth to support the bridge.

How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?

Like any other tooth restoration, the lifespan of a same-day crown or bridge depends on how well you care for it with proper oral hygiene and routine checkups and teeth cleanings. On average, dental crowns can last 10–15 years or longer, and dental bridges last about 10 years.

The difference in longevity is that a crown covers a single tooth, while a bridge is anchored to existing teeth. Because bridges rely on adjacent teeth for support, they may be subject to additional stress and strain, causing them to fail more quickly.

Inlays and Onlays: A Conservative Tooth Restoration

In addition to dental crowns and bridges, Raleigh Dental Arts also offer inlays and onlays, a more conservative alternative to traditional crowns.

An inlay is designed to fit within a tooth’s cusps (the biting surface); an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Inlays and onlays are durable, long-lasting solutions that preserve more tooth structure than a dental crown.

Same-Day Dental Crowns and Bridges Technology

CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is an innovative dental technology that allows our dentists to design, fabricate, and place high-quality restorations in a single appointment.

CEREC Technology: Precision and Customization

CEREC uses CAD/CAM technology to create precise and customized dental restorations. The process begins with a comfortable digital scan of your mouth used to create a 3-D model of your teeth. This model allows our dentists to design your restoration with a high degree of accuracy and precision and ensure a perfect fit and natural appearance. Once the design is complete, the CEREC milling unit uses the digital model to create your custom restoration from a block of high-quality ceramic material.

CEREC same-day crown technology offers numerous benefits to our patients, including:

  • Instead of multiple appointments required for traditional dental restorations, we can design, create, and place your crown in just one visit.
  • CEREC restorations are made from high-quality ceramic materials that closely mimic a natural tooth's appearance for a natural-looking result.
  • The materials used for CEREC restorations are strong and durable, ensuring that your restoration will last for many years with proper care.
  • CAD/CAM technology ensures your restoration is designed and created with exceptional accuracy, providing a perfect fit and optimal function.

Digital Impressions: Accurate, Comfortable, and Efficient

Traditional dental impressions require messy impression materials that most patients find uncomfortable and awkward. Instead, digital impressions use a small, handheld scanner to capture high-resolution images of your teeth and gums. These images are then combined to create a detailed, 3-D model of your mouth, which can be viewed, manipulated, and stored digitally.

Benefits of Digital Impressions

Digital impressions offer numerous advantages over traditional impression methods:

  • Comfort — The digital scanning process is quick and non-invasive, eliminating the need for uncomfortable trays and gag-inducing impression materials.
  • Accuracy — Digital impressions provide highly accurate and detailed images, which can result in a better fit for restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and aligners.
  • Efficiency — Digital scanning is faster than traditional methods, reducing appointment times and allowing for quicker turnaround on dental restorations.
  • Visualization — Digital impressions enable you and your dentist to view a 3-D model of your mouth, making it easier to understand your treatment needs and visualize the final results.
  • Environmentally friendly — Digital impressions are stored electronically for easy access and to reduce paper and material waste.
